This week included a quick trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York. I think it was my third time in the state—the first time was to Buffalo (nope, didn’t make it to Niagara Falls), and the second was to Albany and Saratoga Springs—and it was the first time that I was there in warm weather when I could really get out and do things.
I wasn’t quite sure what this part of New York would look like. My conclusion? Wisconsin. It felt just like eastern Wisconsin. Rolling hills with fields and forest, gambrel-roofed red barns, Holstein cows. Even the town names were familiar: Manchester, Palmyra, Waterloo. Show me pictures and I don’t know how well I could tell the difference.
Except the waterfalls and Finger Lakes themselves. The area around Ithaca has over 100 waterfalls. I only got to visit a couple of them in my short visit, but they were really impressive.
Also notable: getting ice cream at the Dairy Bar on the Cornell University campus. I’m still feel like I have to be loyal to Babcock Hall ice cream at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, but Cornell’s lemon-raspberry cheesecake flavor was the best ice cream I’ve had in a long time. (To be fair, I better go back and try the Madison stuff again!)
Travel deets: Just drive around Ithaca, NY. It’s super pretty and there’s a lot to see. Also be sure to check out the wineries, which I didn’t get to check out but would have been a lot of fun.
